Valor By The Stats: May The Odds Be Ever In Your Favor

November 1, 2017
BALL IN THE AIR. By the end of the 2017 Season, we gave away over 150 footballs. No need to grab your calculators we did the math for you -- that breaks down to roughly 20 footballs per game, 5 per quarter, 3 per minute. (GASP!) That means every 180 seconds of game time, you had chance to go home with an official AFL pigskin. How’s that for a giveaway!?

BALL IN THE STANDS. We can’t take all the credit for that clever title. “Ball in the Stands” is the name of the official rule in the AFL, which states *clears throat* “When a ball is thrown or bounces into the seats surrounding the playing field, the ‘lucky’ fan that catches the ball keeps it.” Pretty awesome, right!? This unique rule sets apart the AFL from the NFL. In case you didn’t know, it’s rare for NFL footballs to be given out, players can even be fined for it ( for real, it’s a thing).

BALL IN YOUR HANDS. Wondering what the winning combination is to taking home your very own game-used ball…a lot of luck and a little bit of skill. You have to be in the right place at the right time and you have to be quick enough with your hands to catch it…before the over-eager guy behind you does. It’s never too early to start practicing for next season…open tryouts, Saturday, December 9 …register today...hollaaa.

BUT REALLY, WHAT ARE THE ODDS? You may be feeling like it's impossible to catch a ball in the stands and in some cases you may be right! Look at baseball, catching just one foul ball in baseball has the odds of 1 in 1000 (unless you’re this guy). But don’t get too down, you have much better odds of catching an AFL football. In fact, if you went to every game you would have a 1 in 74 (73.6076 to be exact) chance of catching a game ball!!!

GO ALL IN. So in conclusion, two words: Season tickets. Joining the Gridiron 365 Club and attending every home game gives you the best odds of going home with a piece of AFL history and 100% odds of having a great time….and with that….see ya next time.
